Apple Foundation Models adds six new model backends including Anthropic and Google integrations

Apple announced six new model backends for its Foundation Models framework at WWDC26, including private cloud compute, Core AI for open-source models on Apple Silicon, MLX for GPU acceleration, Chat Completion API compatibility, and upcoming integrations with Anthropic and Google models. This significantly expands the framework beyond Apple's own models and positions Apple Silicon as a unified AI runtime for both proprietary and third-party models. The Anthropic and Google integrations in particular signal a platform-level endorsement that could meaningfully expand developer reach for both providers.
