At WWDC26, Apple announced it rebuilt Apple Intelligence from the ground up using Google's Gemini model technology for its new Apple Foundation Models, while expanding the Foundation Models framework to cloud models and adding agent-building tools. It also opened Xcode to agentic coding from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google. Apple's reliance on Google Gemini marks a significant strategic shift signaling it is leaning on external frontier models rather than going it alone.
