OpenAI Help: Lockdown Mode

Simon Willison · Jun 05, 2026 · Product Launches

OpenAI's Lockdown Mode is now live, limiting outbound network requests to block prompt-injection data exfiltration.

“Lockdown Mode is designed to help prevent the final stage of data exfiltration from a prompt injection attack by limiting outbound network requests that could transfer sensitive data to an attacker.”

OpenAI has launched Lockdown Mode across ChatGPT personal and Business accounts, deterministically restricting outbound network requests to cut off the exfiltration leg of the 'lethal trifecta' in prompt-injection attacks. It matters because it's a concrete, non-AI-evaluated defense against data theft, though its existence implies default ChatGPT settings lack robust protection against determined exfiltration attacks.
